Regular phone calls and feedback sessions
Just call us with any queries or for a chat! When you are free, we like you to pop in during the holidays as it helps us to understand the way you work and what we can do for you. It also helps us focus on your Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
Finding out what you want
We like to make sure our service is really up to scratch! So we are interested in your feedback. New initiatives that we have put in place through teacher feedback include our Recommend a Teacher/School Scheme, ID cards, emailed booking confirmations, and supply teacher information sheets.
We will do our best to be the best for you!
CV mailing alert
After your registration, we proactively email your CV to relevant schools to get your name known! This has proved useful for many of our schools who keep CVs on record for future reference or are just keen to employ you straight away.
Peace of mind
You will have no liability concerns whilst out and about in school; you will be covered by Standby Teachers Professional Indemnity cover.
Your pay and tax
A simple, paperless timesheet system
To confirm your bookings, your timesheets are managed by us and the school on our website via a secure ‘online schools area’. All you need do is sign in and out at school. We will do the rest. It is important that you keep us fully informed of what you’re up to. If you are offered work directly by a school, you are free to agree; but please let us know. We need to pay you correctly!
How you get paid
You will be paid weekly, one week in arrears. Money will go directly into your account every Friday, before 5pm. Please check your weekly payslips and bank account. If you have any queries please let us know as soon as you can!
Umbrella companies or PAYE?
Standby Teachers offers an in house PAYE option, or you can nominate any umbrella company to run your payroll for you. If you choose the latter please, provide us with the name of the umbrella company, they will issue us with a weekly invoice. These will need to be sent to the accounts department via email -
accounts@standbyteachers.com
. Please note that we do not accept invoices from ‘self-employed’ teachers, you must have a limited company.
TAX
Codes
Please provide us with your P45 as soon as you can. If you don’t have a P45 you will be on a BR (basic rate) tax code, we can provide you with a P46 to complete.
Additional Employers
One tax code per employer! You must establish who you are going to work with most and give them your tax code. A second employer (agency) will use a ‘Basic Rate’ code.
Tax deductions
Please note that if you work a different number of days each week, the tax you pay will vary. The tax you pay is based on your accumulative wage year to date at the time of taxation. From your total gross wage to date, your total wage for the year is estimated and the tax is based on that calculation. If you miss a few weeks you will receive a tax rebate; if you work three weeks continually, after a break you will pay more tax than normal. It is continually adjusted throughout the year.
References
When contacting HMRC, please have your National Insurance number to hand and our PAYE reference; 072/S1021.
Continuing Professional Development
Standby Teachers can help with your Continuing Professional Development. We understand how important it is to keep up to date with knowledge, understanding and classroom skills. We are always happy to help!
There are various sources of CPD:
External courses, further study or advice can be offered by local authorities.

Within schools. When in a long term placement, the school often allows you to participate in training/mentoring in collaborative planning, teaching and classroom discipline as well as whole school development events. This can be in the form of lesson observation, feedback, shadowing and sharing good practice.
The TDA are able to offer nearly 2000 courses covering a variety of subjects. View courses and venues online

What you can do for us
It is through your high standards as a teacher, your punctuality and friendliness that we can continue to keep good relations with schools and provide you with the work you want. Here’s a quick list to keep in mind when in school.
Mobile Phones
When in the classroom keep your phone either turned off or on silent. Please don’t answer it in the classroom! We may send you texts during the day with details of work so please remember to check your phone between lessons.
Lesson Plans
It’s advisable that you have a selection of lesson plans to bring to class with you. Sometimes work is not provided; this is where a prepared lesson plan would be handy! This particularly applies to Primary teaching posts. Don’t forget to mark all work before you leave unless you’re asked not to.
School Policy
Whilst in school you must adhere to the school’s policies. Once you are there familiarise yourself with them! Often the school will provide you with an information pack or a Standby Teachers information sheet. Always remember that all schools operate a ‘hands off’ policy with the children.
Presentation
Schools expect you to attend in a smart fashion. In most cases this means smart casual, or a suit. If you are covering PE you should take suitable PE kit.
Timekeeping
Unless you’ve agreed otherwise, it’s important that you arrive at the school before 8.30 am. The duration of the school day is normally from 8.30 am to 3.30pm for a full day, 8.30 am to 12.30pm for a morning and 12.30 to 3.30pm for an afternoon.
If you are running late please contact us and then we can inform the school of the situation - they like this!
How’s it going?
We are always keen to hear back on how your assignment is going. Should you have an incident in the classroom, first inform your contact at the school, and then tell us. We will do all we can to support you.
To recap
Don’t use mobile phones during class.
Bring a few lesson plans just in case.
Be aware of individual school policies and always adhere to school’s "hands off" policy.
Dress in smart casual or a suit and bring PE kit if required.
Get to school before 8.30am for full day and morning assignments and before 12.30pm for afternoon assignments.
Let us know if you are running late.
Report any unusual incidents in the classroom as soon as possible.
Keep in touch with us.
